Transportation Info
Following are the travel options to and from Camp Walden for the summer of 2024.
Transportation to Camp on Friday, June 21st
We provide chaperoned transportation from metropolitan areas to camp at the beginning of the summer and home at the end of the summer both by bus (from New York City, Westchester and Boston) and by airplane (Baltimore, Los Angeles and Miami).
The bus from New York City to camp will leave from the south side of Lincoln Center, 62nd Street, at 8:00 am on Friday, June 21st. Please plan to arrive no later than 7:30 am. We will send you an email once the bus has arrived at camp. The Bus will return to the same location from camp on Friday, August 9th between 2:30 and 3:30 pm. We will send you an email once the bus has left camp for New York City and again when it is about an hour’s drive from the City.
The bus from Westchester will leave the Bloomingdales’ parking lot in White Plains, 175 Bloomingdale Road, White Plains, NY 10605 (exit 8 off 287) at 8:30 am on Friday, June 21st. Please plan to arrive no later than 8:00 am. We will send you an email once the bus has arrived at camp. The Bus will return to the same location on Friday, August 9th between 2 and 3 pm. We will send you an email once the bus has left camp for Westchester and again when it is about an hour’s drive from White Plains.
The bus from Boston will leave from the Northbound Lexington Service Area on Route 128 (also called I-95) at 12:00 noon on Friday, June 21st. The Lexington Service Area is on the exit ramp between Exits 46A and 46B. If you are driving southbound you will need to reverse direction at Exit 45A (Route 2). Please plan to arrive at the service area no later than 11:30 am. We will send you an email once the bus has arrived at camp. The Bus will return to the same location on Friday, August 9th between 10:30 and 11 am. We will send you an email once the bus has left camp for Boston.
If you are planning to have your camper travel as part of one of our camp group chaperoned flights from Baltimore, Miami or Los Angeles, please purchase these tickets here. The deadline for making these reservations is April 1. Information regarding the staff chaperone and meet up locations will be emailed to you in mid-June.
If your camper is traveling to camp by plane and is not part of one of these groups, please plan to have them fly into Portland, ME and arrive on Friday, June 21st between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. Camp staff will be at the airport to meet and transport them to camp in camp vans. Return flights on Friday, August 9th from Portland, ME should be scheduled to leave the Portland Jetport between 8:00 am and 12 noon. Our experience is that flights that leave earlier than 8 am or after noon tend to be cancelled due to weather or other circumstances beyond our control.
If you are driving your camper to camp, please let us know that as well and please plan to arrive at camp on Friday, June 21st between 2 pm and 4 pm. If you are planning to pick your camper up at camp, please do this between 8:00 am and 10 am on Friday, August 9th. Thank you!
***Bunk 12 travels to camp a few days earlier than the other campers. This summer they will arrive on Tuesday, June 18th. As is Walden tradition, Bunk 12 will be met at the Portland Airport and travel to camp together. Please try to schedule their arrival, either by plane or car, to the Portland, ME Airport on Tuesday, June 18th between 10 am and 4:00 pm. Their luggage will be waiting for them in their bunk!
Camper usually do not travel in Walden uniform but change into their uniform once they are at camp and unpacked. Please pack a lunch and plenty of snacks and activities for their trip. The bus will only stop so the driver can take a break.
If you arrive late at the bus locations, please call us at 207-452-2901. We will also try to contact you. The buses will wait up to 30 minutes after the scheduled departure time. If you miss the bus, you will be responsible for transporting your camper to camp.
If your child is traveling by plane and the flight is delayed or cancelled, please call us at 207-452-2901. A few days before June 21st, we will provide you with the name of the Walden staff member who will meet your camper at the Portland Airport.
Transportation from Camp on Friday, August 9th
All campers traveling by plane, van or bus will leave camp between 6:00 am and 8:00 am. Once the vans and buses have left camp, you will receive an email. Pick-up locations in Boston, Westchester and New York City are the same as the June 21st drop-off locations.
If you are picking up your camper at camp please plan to arrive at Walden between 8:00 am and 10:00 am. If someone else besides you will be picking up your camper we will need your permission in writing for them to pick them up.
We know that some of our campers will need to arrive at camp a few days after our first day or leave a few days before the last day of camp. If this is true for your camper please email or call, 207-452-2901, so we can create a travel plan for them. We will email you during the second week in June and during the first week of August to confirm your campers travel plans.
